Misamis Occidental broadcaster shot dead

COTABATO CITY (John Unson, Nov. 5, 2023) — A popular radio commentator perished in a daring gun attack right in a broadcast booth of a station in Calamba town in Misamis Occidental on Sunday morning.

The Calamba Municipal Police Station, in a report to Brig. Gen. Ricardo G. Layug, Jr., director of the Police Regional Office-10 in Cagayan de Oro City, identified the fatality as Juan Tumpag Jumalon, who died on the spot from two bullet wounds in his face.

Jumalon owned the 94.7 FM Gold Radio Calamba, located at his residential yard in Barangay Don Bernardo A. Neri in Calamba.

He was shot dead by a lone attacker whom probers from the Calamba MPS are still trying to identify.

A livestream broadcast video that circulated in different Mindanao regions in less than an hour after the incident showed an attacker with a pistol approached Jumalon inside the broadcast booth while talking on air, fired twice, grabbed his gold necklace and ran away.

Members of his family and barangay emergency responders rushed Jumalon to the Calamba District Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival by attending physician Geopeter L. Manisan. (JOHN UNSON)
